Case study: smart locks for an apartment building in Manchester

Between June and November 2023 our locksmiths replaced the key locks in an apartment building in Manchester city centre with smart locks that open by code, fingerprint or app. The work ran over seven visits.

The job

  • Where: Manchester city centre (M4)
  • Doors: timber flat entrance doors, staff doors and communal doors
  • Locks fitted: KIC Prolok smart locks, with keypad and fingerprint reader on the handle, and Wi-Fi models for doors that needed remote access
  • Visits: seven, from June to November 2023

What we did

  1. Removed the old locks and handles. Each door had its own set of old holes to deal with.
  2. Filled and recut the door edge where the old lock case did not match the new one.
  3. Fitted the new lock case and the smart handle with keypad and fingerprint reader.
  4. Set up the app, codes and fingerprints, and checked each door locked and unlocked from both sides.

What to plan for if you manage a building

  • Do it in phases. Spreading the work over several visits keeps the building running and every door working while you go.
  • Expect old holes. Most doors have been drilled before. Allow time for filling and recutting so the new lock sits flat.
  • Decide who needs remote access. Wi-Fi models let you change codes from your phone; doors that do not need it can use Bluetooth models.
