Case study: card-access smart lock on a London building entrance

In April 2022 our locksmiths fitted a slim smart handle with a card reader to the timber street door of a commercial building in west London, with a new multipoint lock case and an exit button inside. People who work there open the door with a card or fob, and leave with the push of a button.

The job

  • Where: west London (W10)
  • Door: a painted timber entrance door onto the street
  • Fitted: slim smart handle with card reader, multipoint lock case with a 60mm backset, and an internal exit button

What we did

  1. Measured the door and chose a lock case with the right backset (60mm) so the slim handle lined up with the existing door edge.
  2. Fitted the multipoint lock case and keeps so the door locks at several points along its edge.
  3. Fitted the smart handle with card reader outside and the exit button inside, then set up the cards.

Worth knowing for offices and shops

  • Measure the backset first. The backset decides which slim handles will fit without recutting the door.
  • Plan the exit. A card-only door needs a simple way out from inside, such as an exit button or a handle that always opens from inside.
  • Lost card, no lock change. A lost card is deleted from the system; nobody has to change the lock.
