Case study: smart locks on the front and back doors of a London terrace

In April 2025 our locksmiths fitted smart locks to both the front and back uPVC doors of a terraced house in east London (E7), together with a door sensor and a Wi-Fi bridge. The owner can now lock, unlock and check both doors from their phone, wherever they are.

The job

  • Where: east London (E7), April 2025
  • Doors: white uPVC front and back doors, both with multipoint locks and euro cylinders
  • Fitted: two smart locks, a door sensor on the frame and a Wi-Fi bridge

What we did

  1. Measured first. uPVC smart handles have to match the door's screw positions and the distance from the handle to the cylinder. We measured both doors before ordering.
  2. Fitted the smart locks. The old handles came off and the smart handles went on, working the existing multipoint locks.
  3. Added a door sensor. A small sensor on the frame tells the app whether the door is actually shut, not just locked.
  4. Connected the bridge. The Wi-Fi bridge links the locks to the internet, so the owner can let someone in or check the doors when away from home.

What to take from this job

  • Do the back door too. Back doors are often the weaker one. Doing both on one visit costs less than two separate call-outs.
  • Bluetooth only works nearby. If you want to use the lock away from home, you need a Wi-Fi bridge.
  • Measure before you buy. Our uPVC measuring guide shows the numbers that matter.
