Lock change: new locks and keeps on a split door frame in Reading

In October 2026 our locksmith repaired a front door in Reading (RG30) where the timber frame had split along the lock keeps, then fitted two new high-security locks.

The job

  • Where: Reading (RG30), October 2026
  • Door: front door in a weathered timber frame
  • Fitted: two high-security door locks and new keeps

What we did

  1. Assessed the frame: the timber had split where the keeps were screwed in, so the bolts had nothing solid to lock into.
  2. Refitted the keeps so they hold in sound timber.
  3. Fitted the two new locks and checked every bolt engaged fully into the frame.

Worth knowing

  • A lock is only as strong as the frame. If the keeps sit in rotten or split wood, a new lock alone will not stop the door being forced.
  • Book ahead for bigger jobs. This job was booked in September and done in October, with the locks chosen for the door.
