How to install a Smart Lock

A smart lock will allow you to keep your home safe and secure using the latest technology.

Smart lock systems connect to your Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to control access to your home, usually via a code, smartphone app or key fob. As well as being easier to use and more secure than traditional locks, they can also be monitored and controlled from anywhere.

So it’s not surprising that smart locks are becoming increasingly popular.

How to install a smart lock on your door

Installing a smart lock is a lot easier than you might think. Of course, the process will vary depending on the type and brand of the lock, as well as the door.

There are various different types of smart lock, all with varying installation processes:

·       Wi-Fi

·       Bluetooth

·       RFID

·       Keypad

·       Biometric

·       E-Key

But the overall process doesn’t usually vary too much:

Remove the current lock

Firstly, you’ll need to remove the current lock. This can usually be done with a screwdriver or power tools, but will depend on the type of door and lock.

Some smart locks fit over the existing turning cylinder on the inside of your door and work with the cylinder and deadbolt. If this is the case, you won’t need this step.

Install the new latch

Once the old latch has been removed, you’ll be able to install the new one. Follow the instructions that come with your specific lock.

Install the smart lock

Next, you’ll usually need to install the smart lock. The wires tend to slide under the latch, so they are secure and hidden from view.

Install the inside panel

Once the smart lock has been installed, you’ll usually need to install the inside panel. This will involve plugging in the electrical components as per the instructions and securing it in place. Check the lock works properly before you move on to the next step!

Set up the smart device

Finally, you’ll need to set up your smart device. Again, the exact steps for this will depend on your lock. However, it typically involves downloading the specified app and following the set-up steps. Again, once you’re set up and ready, make sure you test the lock to ensure it functions correctly.

Smart lock installation tips

When installing your smart lock, there are several things to be aware of to ensure it is as secure as possible:

·       Does the door close properly? Some doors, particularly older ones, have issues with alignment. If this is the case, get this issue fixed before you fit a smart lock.

·       Do you have enough space for the lock? Smart locks are typically bigger than most traditional style locks, with large thumb turn plates. So make sure your smart lock will fit before your start the installation process.

·       Do you have a traditional deadbolt? If you have a traditional deadbolt, you may be able to use it with your new smart security system.

·       Are you installing smart locks on more than one door? If you’re updating more than one door with a smart lock, or plan to in the future, make sure you use the same brand every time.
